He is currently a Senior Lecturer at IIT-Kanpur. He has been a recipient of the Dirac Fellowship from European Union. From 1989 to 1995, he was associated with Tata Consultancy Services, TCS Group, an Indian multinational company. After returning to India in 1995, he worked as a visiting faculty member at IIT Kanpur and at IIIT, Gwalior. In 2001, he joined IIT-Kanpur as a Senior Professor of Computer Science and currently directs the Centre for Education and Research in Cognition and Learning (CERCOL), which seeks to develop fundamental research in the areas of cognition and computer science using state-of-the art experimental tools developed by CERCOL. Professor Rao is a Fellow of the National Academy of Engineering, India and the Indian National Science Academy, In 2013 he won the IEEE Informatics Society's Distinguished Service Award. He has been a recipient of the Dirac Fellowship from European Union.
