Online Audio Books for Kids with Pictures: Why They Are Better Than Traditional Books



Through audiobooks, you can entertain your kids with classic and modern stories, introduce them to historical periods and situations that are different from their own, and help them practice listening comprehension. And if you need time to work or finish other to-dos, setting your child up with a good audiobook can give you the space to get things done.

Beyond these beloved classics, Spotify also has a whole Spoken Word section dedicated to audiobooks, poems, and other non-musical resources. You will need to create a free Spotify account to access any of these items.


The Storynory podcast offers short weekly audiobooks based on folklore and fairy tales from around the world. Popular retold tales include stories by The Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Andersen, and Aesop.


Of course, audio books should be used to supplement, and not entirely replace reading. But when used alongside other media, including printed books, ebooks, and reading aloud in person with children, audio books can be another excellent way to instill a love of books and literature in children.


While sites like Audible are popular and provide thousands of titles for adults and children, the cost of purchasing books and membership fees can add up. Luckily, there are thousands of free audio books available for readers of all ages if you know where to look. Here are six of the best sources, some of which offer books for all readers, and some tailored just for kids.


There are also books read by great actors, including Sherlock Holmes read by Sir John Gielguld, as well as classics from Shakespeare, Jane Austen, and categories like Russian Lit and literature from women authors, and fairy tales for kids.


In addition to the online options below, be sure to check your local public library for Spanish audiobooks, or books with CDs. Many libraries have extensive collections, and you might find some goodies there!


For teachers in the classroom, Spanish audio books could make a good station or alternative activity for native/heritage speakers. If you have older students who are still struggling to read, giving them a simple audio option can also be a helpful alternative.


Unite for Literacy is a wonderful free site with good-sized collection of Spanish digital books for kids. You click on to turn the pages and listen to the audio. Most of the books are written in simple Spanish (though they are written for native speakers), with non-fiction themes like colors, toys, art, animals, and more. The site includes many other languages, in addition to Spanish!


Scholastic has recently made a number of their popular titles available as read-alouds on YouTube. This is a great source for popular books that have been shared with permission online, and we found many of our favorite titles (like Harry, el perrito sucio) available in Spanish.


The Spanish Experiment currently has nine free stories for listening, including classic fairy and folk tales. When you click on the link, the first five will show as free, and the last four with a membership. But if you click on over to The Fable Cottage, they are free too! These stories are narrated with a very high-quality audio and include a script you can follow with a few images along the way.


123 Teach Me provides audio of short stories for kids, along with a script of the story. There are currently 18 stories available, with comprehension questions and scripts to follow along with.


The Bible App is free, and technically more than a simple audiobook. You can download the stories, which include text, audio, and images that are slightly animated. This is a huge resource to have at your fingertips, if you read the Bible with your kids!


There are several paid options for Spanish audio books. Amazon Audible seems to have the largest collection, with titles like Buenas Noches, Luna, stories from Beatrix Potter, and popular folk takes. It also includes many chapter books like Esperanza Renace, Manoltio Gafotas, y El Prinicipito. (There is a monthly fee.) Click here to go directly to the collection of Spanish-language books.

When the kids were little we had a selection of audio books on CD and borrowed CDs from the library, but these days our audiobooks are all digital and there is an amazing selection of fabulous free audiobooks for kids available online.

The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin at Light Up Your Brain.This is one of my favourite Beatrice Potter books, and there are a few others, plus quite a big selection of other audio books at Light Up Your Brain.


Thanks for these treasures! We are great fans of story CDs/downloads in long car trips and have avoided buying a DVD player by using them. I enjoy watching the kids looking out the window with faces turned up in concentration, imagining their own pictures to the story being read.

BiblioBoard is an easy to use online collection of indie published books as well as uncopywrited materials. Simpley choose your collection by clicking on Biblioboard Open Access, Biblioboard Library of Illinois or Rails for Schools. BiblioBoard is also available for Android, IOS, and Kindle through their app stores

What is it? Storyline Online understands the importance and power of reading aloud to kids! Storyline Online is brought to by the Screen Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA) Foundation. It streams videos featuring celebrities reading books aloud.


What is it? Funbrain is website with games, math practice, videos, and books for kids. Books are marked with grade levels, but are not read aloud. It includes both books original to Funbrain, as well as mainstream popular picture and chapter books.


What is it? Storynory is an educational website with free audio stories for kids. Stories include original books, fairy tales, classic authors, poems, and songs/nursery rhymes. The text of the story is on display as it is read. But, the books or the images are not animated. I would consider it an audible reading experience. 2ff7e9595c
